Honey Myrtle

Honey Myrtle essential oil is a rare oil that only recently became utilised in the world of essential oils. Very little is known of its traditional usage, but experts assume that the Aboriginal people of Australia used Honey Myrtle essential oil for its anti-inflammatory purposes, such as to soothe troubled skin. Unlike Anise Myrtle and Lemon Myrtle, the Honey Myrtle plant was not exploited during the World Wars for its essence or timber, so it remained in tact. Today, Honey Myrtle is growing in popularity as a warmer version of Lemon Myrtle essential oil.

The Honey Myrtle essential oil plant, Melaleuca teretifolia, occurs naturally in Western Australia’s sandy soils and wetlands. It typically grows about 2-5 metres in the wild, though when cultivated on plantations in Western Australia the maximum height averages 2 metres. The Melaleuca teretifolia shrub can be identified by its long, thin leaves and clusters of white flowers spread over long branches in late spring and summer. Honey Myrtle oil is extracted from this shrub through steam distillation of the middle and upper stem, branchlets, and leaves.

Honey Myrtle essential oil boasts an aroma of lemon being tamed by the soothing notes of honey. It’ a warm, delicate oil known best for its properties as an antimicrobial, antiviral, sedative, anti-fungal, antidepressant, and anti-inflammatory. Honey Myrtle’s incredibly high citral content, typically up to 70%, generates its powerful abilities.

Emotionally, pure Honey Myrtle essential oil bolsters the mind and spirit by alleviating depression and anxiety. The oil can even improve focus and encourage concentration, which makes it perfect in a diffuser for young children and adults alike. After a day of intense emotions and high-stress situations, Honey Myrtle essential oil can lull the mind back into a place of peace.

Physically, Honey Myrtle essential oil is recognised by the University of Western Australia for its fierce antimicrobial ability to work against bacterial strains including Candida albicans, Staphylococcus aureus, and E. coli. This makes Honey Myrtle an effective and aromatic addition to any household disinfectant.

Honey Myrtle essential oils blends well with Blue Cypress, varieties of Eucalyptus, Nerolina, Rosalina, Sandalwood, and Tea Tree.
